Ilaria Fratoddi vi invita al seminario:
Food dyes and heavy metals detection methods
di Abdullah Taner BİŞGİN, Niğde University (Turchia)
Il seminario si terrà venerdì 15 maggio p.v. alle ore 15.00, in Aula VII, edificio V. Caglioti (CU032).
Abstract
Excessive consumption of food dyes beyond their permissible daily intake may cause various health problems such as itching in adults and hyperactive behavioral disorders in children. On the other hand, some heavy metals such as Cu and Zn are essential, whereas Cd and Pb are toxic and undesirable. However, all heavy metals can pose toxicity and increase cancer risk when present above their threshold limits. For these reasons, determination of food dyes and heavy metals in the foodstuffs is of great importance. This seminar focuses on harmful effects of food dyes and heavy metals and also sustainable new trends extraction and preconcentration methods developed for their determination. This seminar presentation includes liquid-phase microextraction methods such as deep eutectic solvent based microextraction and switchable hydrophilicity solvent based microextraction for the separation, preconcentration and determination of food dyes and heavy metals.
Prof. Dr. Abdullah Taner BİŞGİN was born on October 13, 1987, in Ankara, the capital city of Türkiye. After completing his school education in Ankara, he pursued his undergraduate studies in Chemistry at the Faculty of Science, Niğde University, between 2005 and 2009, graduating as the top student of his department.
In 2009, he began his integrated Ph.D. program at the Faculty of Science, Ankara University, and successfully completed it at Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University in 2017, earning the title of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). In the same year, November 2009, he started his academic career as a Research Assistant in the Department of Chemistry at Niğde University. At Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University, within the Department of Chemistry, Division of Analytical Chemistry, he served as an Assistant Professor between 2018 and 2020, as an Associate Professor between 2020 and 2025, and has been working as a Professor since December 27, 2025. In addition to being a Certified Occupational Health and Safety Specialist, Prof. Dr. BİŞGİN’s research interests focus on separation, purification, and preconcentration techniques in analytical chemistry.
He has developed several analytical methods for the determination of trace metals and food dyes, employing solid-phase extraction (SPE), cloud point extraction (CPE), liquid–liquid microextraction (LLE), and deep eutectic solvent (DES)-based microextraction techniques. Throughout his career, Prof. Dr. BİŞGİN has presented 13 papers at national and 16 papers at international conferences, authored over 40 scientific articles, and participated in nine research projects. Based on 2024 data, he was included in the “World’s Top 2% Scientists List” under the Annual Impact category (2025 edition), published by Stanford University (USA) and indexed in the Elsevier database. He teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses, including Analytical Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry Laboratory, Trace Element Analysis, Environmental Chemistry, Occupational Health and Safety, General Chemistry, Method Development in Analytical Chemistry, Microextraction Methods, Sample Preparation Techniques and Chemical Analysis, and Preconcentration Techniques. Since May 2026, Prof. Dr. Abdullah Taner BİŞGİN has been serving as the Erasmus Coordinator of the Department of Chemistry.
